New to direct primary care? Here are answers to the questions families ask us most — and we're always happy to talk through anything else.
Questions Families Ask Most
What is Direct Primary Care (DPC) and how does it work?
DPC is a simple way to get healthcare for your child. Instead of using insurance for office visits, you pay a flat monthly membership fee directly to your provider. Think of it like a gym membership or a streaming service for your child's health. Your child gets unlimited at-home visits and longer appointments without ever paying a co-pay. My goal is to care for your child the way medicine used to feel, personal, accessible, and built on trust.
Do you take insurance?
No, this practice does not bill or work with insurance for membership services. This helps keep care simple, clear, and focused on your child. Insurance can still be helpful. You can use it for specialist visits, lab work, imaging (like X-rays or CT scans), and hospital care. The membership covers your child's primary care needs, such as well visits, check-ups, sick visits, and minor procedures. It does not cover major medical events like ER visits, surgery, or hospital stays. For that reason, many families choose to keep a health insurance plan (often a high-deductible or catastrophic plan) as a safety net for bigger, unexpected costs.
Can I use my Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for my membership?
In many cases, yes. Pediatric DPC memberships may qualify as an HSA or FSA expense. Because every plan is different, it's best to check with your plan provider to be sure.
What if my child does need a specialist?
If your child needs a specialist, I will help guide you every step of the way. I will help recommend trusted specialists, coordinate records, review your child's plan with you, and stay involved in their care. You won't have to figure things out alone. If you have insurance, you can use it for specialist visits. If not, I can help you find self-pay options.
How does in-home pediatric care work?
I come to you. I bring the medical equipment needed to care for your child right at home. That means no waiting rooms, no rushing out the door with a sick child, and less stress for the whole family. Children are often more relaxed at home, which helps visits go more smoothly and comfortably.
Do you offer vaccines?
I believe medical decisions are best made through open, respectful conversations and partnership. I provide evidence-based guidance and support while honoring each family's choices. At this time, vaccines are not given in the practice. If your family chooses to vaccinate, I will help connect you with local options, such as the health department or other trusted resources.
What about labs, imaging, and medications?
I work with local laboratory and imaging centers to offer clear, discounted cash pricing whenever possible. Prescriptions are sent directly to your pharmacy and I can help you find cost-saving options if needed. You can use insurance for labs, imaging, and prescriptions if you prefer.
What if I need to cancel my membership?
You can cancel at any time with 30 days' notice.
A Few More Things Families Ask
What ages do you care for?
I care for children from their very first days as newborns through adolescence — birth through age 19.
Is DPC a good fit for healthy children too?
Absolutely. Well visits, developmental and nutritional guidance, and preventive care are all part of your membership — along with the everyday peace of mind of being able to reach me easily whenever a question comes up.
How much does membership cost?
Pricing is simple and transparent, based on your child's age:
0–23 mo · $110/mo2–5 yrs · $95/mo6–19 · $85/moFamily Max · $300/mo
Yes — there is a one-time $100 enrollment fee per family, which includes setup and access to the online portal.
What should I do in an emergency?
For any life-threatening emergency, always call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, having direct access to me means many situations can be handled quickly — often helping your family avoid an unnecessary trip to urgent care or the ER.
Do I have to leave my current pediatrician?
That's entirely your choice. Many families make Thriving Olive their child's primary care home, while others join for the added access and convenience alongside existing care. I'm always happy to talk through what makes the most sense for your family.
